As a kid, Laura started her career by designing birthday cards and team sweatshirts in Microsoft Publisher.
How it started
In high school, Laura stumbled into a high school digital art 101 class – this was a pivotal experience where Laura realized her creative passion, quickly excelling with professional design tools and techniques. Laura continued to pursue her passion for graphic design, receiving her BFA in Graphic Communication from Northern Michigan University. In her formal training and internships, Laura took deep interest in cinematography, animation, film photography and web design, focusing on creating cohesive design systems across multi-media applications.
How it’s going
In 2011, Laura settled in Minneapolis to spend the next six years developing expertise in UX, UI and Service Design at Azul Seven. Today, Laura is a Principal on Slalom's Experience Design team, where she continues to partner with clients and product engineering teams, leading UX/UI solutions with a human-centered approach. Additionally, Laura specializes in the human-centered design approach "Design Thinking Methodology" as a coach and practitioner, as well as a service designer.
Experience overview
Laura’s experience spans across several industries such as Healthcare (Insurance, Health & Wellbeing, Medical Systems), Energy, Financial Services, Government (Local & Federal), Industrial Manufacturing, Food & Beverage, Customer Service, and Non-profit. In this experience, Laura has designed solutions that include responsive websites, web apps, native apps, software, animation, branding, marketing and non-digital/in-person customer experiences.
Hobbies and interests
Outside of work, Laura can be found hiking, biking, camping, canoeing and snowboarding.
Laura’s creative side is currently obsessed with tapestry weaving and floral design, and taking analog film photos of everyday life. In her past, Laura has dabbled in sewing, watercolor painting, pottery throwing and silk-screen printing.
